Self-described as "a little community with a lot of rage," you can soak up impassioned vibes and read blistering exposes detailing sexist attitudes in the news, pop culture, and science! A must-join community if you are, or love, a feminist. (NB: the topic of whether a "man" can be a feminist is outside the scope of this spotlight, but will probably wind up on the Writer's Block.)

Turning to photography as a creative outlet during a valiant fight with breast cancer at age 34, [info]renaissance10 survived and set up a photo contest to help raise funds for the Lavender Trust, a nonprofit that provides information and support to younger women with breast cancer. In the first two years, the competition brought in over £65,000 (that's $107,260.73 U.S.!), with entries from 130 countries last year. Renaissance10 recently joined LiveJournal to meet other passionate photographers and find supportive friends.

In the midst of getting my Bachelor's degree at Sac State, I've learned a few other things as well, that seemed like they might be helpful to others if I share... These are in kind of random order.

• College marching band really isn't much different from high school marching band. There are still the silly cliques and the silly people who think that they are SO much better than you are because they're a freshman and they're the shit.

• It is worth saving yourself $139 for a parking permit to just park across the street from campus on Newman Ct. It's that cul-de-sac off of Carlson on the left once you cross J Street... there is free parking there, and yes, it is competitive, but it's worth it to save yourself the ridiculous cost of a parking permit.

• The UTAPS folks are serious business when it comes to giving out parking tickets. They're about $35 each, and no, you will not get away with using a weekly permit for one day beyond the week you bought it for.

• The 4th floor of the library is a great place to take a nap, since it is always completely silent.

• The lower level of the library can also be a good place for a nap as long as no one is being noisy... there are couches down there that are comfy.

• Calaveras Hall has a computer lab that lets students print up to 10 pages for free (yes, without your OneCard). I have been printing almost everything there for a year now.

• The Library Collaborative (right next to the Java City across from the library entrance) generally has WAY shorter lines for computer use than the lab on the 2nd floor of the library. Plus, you can eat in there.

• The University Union is a great place to lindy bomb. Sadly, I only found this out during my last semester at Sac State.

• The UU has some rooms on the third floor that tend to be empty and available to use for group projects and such. Sure, they probably don't really *want* us in there, but no one kicked us out!

• The Spanish department is highly disappointing, and if you can, don't minor in it - minor in something more useful like TESOL.

• The dance department is a lot of fun and definitely worth participating in. Auditioning for shows and being in them is also a great experience.

• The English department at Sac State is pretty awesome. Some teachers are more awesome than others, but for the most part they're a good bunch of people working hard to help us learn.

• The "degree progress report" thing on MySacState tends to be quite off and unreliable. Right now, if I were relying on that thing to tell me the truth, I'd be freaking out over it telling me I have not completed all my graduation requirements, when I've already gone through the ceremony. However, since both the department heads and the dean signed my graduation applications, it's kind of silly to get worked up over.

• Sometimes Sac State does cool things like giving away free food (like when they opened up that new hall last semester) or having Adult Swim come and visit and give away free stuff. Keeping your eyes and ears open for these things is good.

Hmm, that's about all I can think of for now. I may add to this later. :)

Do any stores in Houston buy bikes?

I have Montana Mongoose mountain bike that's in very good condition (see my Craigslist ad here). I just haven't had much time to use it and I'd rather sell it to someone who'll get to go out and really enjoy riding around between classes. :) Craigslist has mainly yielded spam and people promising to pay me in bank draft certificates, so I'm considering other options for getting this bike off my hands.
